Fort St. Angelo
Towers and Forts - Historical Places, 3 cities
Bastioned Fort of St. Angelo is in Birgu Waterfront, or Citta Vittoriosa and it lays in the southeast of Malta, overlooking the Grand Harbor and the Valletta city. It is located on the tip of middle peninsula in 3 cities, surrounded with the Vittoriosa Yacht Marina, many restaurants and landmarks from the rich historical heritage, gained through a 500 year long period of time.
As the Birgu was the first seat of the Order of the Knights of Saint John, the fort was the most significant defence point and it was strategically important during the Great Siege of Malta, in 1565. The Grand Master de Valette defeated the Turkish Armada after 3 months long siege and since then Fort St. Angelo is celebrating a public holiday, Victory Day, on September 8th. On that day, people are laying the wreaths and later is starting a traditional boat race Vitorja Regatta, watched by thousands of tourists and locals. All events are followed by the fireworks, in the evening hours.
The Fort itself went through lots of restoration, having badly ruined and bombed during the WWII. Nowadays, beside the building within the fortress, there are 2 chapels and Vittoriosa City Museum, as well as the upper part of the Fort, still under the supervision of Order of St. John. It is easy to reach Birgu by boat, if you take a ride from the Valletta Waterfront. Or if you decide to travel by bus, take line no.2, and walk 15 minutes from the Birgu center toward the Fort.
The opening hours are every day 9AM - 4.30PM, except on Sundays. Tickets are sold for 8.00eur for adults, 5.00eur for seniors and students and 3.00eur for the kids.
