Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette
Famous from Malta, Valletta
Jean Parisot de Valette (1495 - 1568) was the 49th Grand Master of the Order of Malta. As Grand Master, Valette became the Order's hero commanding the resistance against the Ottomans at the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. He fought and successfully repulsed the Turks at the greatest battle over the island, in which the vastly outnumbered Christians held out for over 3 months against an Ottoman force.
As a result of the Order's victory, he declined the offer of a cardinal's hat in order to maintain independence from the papacy. Grand Master gave the plans for building the baroque city, which is named after him, but he didn`t lived long enough to his city finished. His bronze statue is placed in 2012 at the square between open air theatre, called Royal Opera House, and the historic building named Auberge de Castille.
