Knights of Malta
Famous from Malta, Mdina
Knights of Malta were established long ago they came to Malta. Their original name is Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, given by the primary role they had back in 11th century. After the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 during the First Crusade, the organisation became a religious and military order under its own Papal charter, charged with the care and defence of the Holy Land.
Long after that, when the Order lost the battle over Rhodes (Greece), the island of Malta was given to them by the king of Sicily on 1530. Knights of Malta had their remarkable 268 year long impact on every aspect of life in the country, firstly by defending the island from the Ottoman empire attack, then re-building it`s fortresses and gaining the respect among Mediterranean countries.
Nowadays, it is inevitable to notice the traces the Knights left behind. A rich historical heritage of Malta is made out of their presence for almost three centuries. Nowadays, the Order maintains diplomatic relations with 106 countries, involved in helping victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters by providing medical assistance, caring for refugees and distributing medicines.
The Order inspired many local and foreign movie makers to create historical documentaries, as audio-visual spectacles, playing in the cinemas around Valletta and Mdina. One of them is "Malta Experience" 5D show, shown daily at St. Elmo Bastion, in Mediterranean Street.
