Famous from Malta, Marsaxlokk
The Luzzu boats are considered national symbols of the archipelago, still widely used for transportation and fishing around Malta. Every bay, harbor and fishing village has these colorful boats floating around. The very unique luzzu design is believed to have originated in Phoenician times. Luzzus usually have pointed bows with a pair of Osiris eyes at the front in order to ward off evil spirits and protect fishermen while out at sea.
If you happen to be at Marsaxlokk after the summer season, you can see fisherman repairing and painting them in bright yellow, blue, red and green colors. Boat tours for the short rides around Grand Harbor are operating from Valletta Waterfront to 3 cities.
