Rabat & Mdina
Northwest Malta, Mdina
Rabat is a town in the north region of Malta and it is located approx. 16 km west from the capital city Valletta. It is a commercial centre, as well as a large agricultural areas, covered with vineyards and olive trees. The town is right next to the Citadel Mdina, which use to be medieval capital of Malta.
A famous fortified medieval town, which preserved its original character till today is a home to many world known movies filmed right in the heart of the city. Still confined within its walls, on the top of the hill, it has a population of just under 300, but it is listed as one of the most popular tourist attractions on Malta, visited by 750.000 tourists per year. Mdina is referred to as the “Silent City” by Maltese and visitors alike - no cars are allowed with the city walls (except of residents).
The town has a relaxing atmosphere, with it`s narrow streets and alleyways. A day spent in Mdina is different from anything else in Malta, because of it`s charming restaurants, souvenir shops, event venues and spectacular views all over the island.
From Valletta, you can take 3 different bus lines (no. 50, 52 and 56), but due to a high traffic on the main roads, sometimes it takes more than 40 minutes to reach it. Once you finish your visit in Mdina, you can easily reach the most popular cliffs in Malta, called Dingli cliffs. Public buses are organized on regular basis from-to this tourist attraction.
